JEE Main 2025 · 22 January · evening · Single correct · +4 / −1
Given below are two statements :
Statement (I) : An element in the extreme left of the periodic table forms acidic oxides.
Statement (II) : Acid is formed during the reaction between water and oxide of a reactive element present in the extreme right of the periodic table.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- (a) Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- (b) Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- (c) Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- (d) Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Answer and solution
Answer (d) Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 4 steps
Left side metals give basic oxides, right side non-metals give acidic oxides. Statement I has it backwards.
- Extreme left. The extreme left holds the alkali metals, the most metallic elements. Their oxides are strongly basic: Na₂O + H₂O → 2NaOH. So Statement I is false.
- Extreme right. On the right, ignoring the unreactive noble gases, the reactive elements are non-metals such as the halogens. Their oxides are acidic and give acids with water: Cl₂O₇ + H₂O → 2HClO₄. So Statement II is true.
- The trend. Across a period, metallic character falls. Oxides change from basic, through amphoteric (like Al₂O₃), to acidic.
- So. Statement I is false and Statement II is true, which is option (d).
The idea to keep. Metal oxides are basic and non-metal oxides are acidic. Going left to right across a period, oxides move from basic to amphoteric to acidic.
