Match the List - I with List - II
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
| List - I | List - II | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| (A) | Pressure varies inversely with volume of an ideal gas. | (I) | Adiabatic process |
| (B) | Heat absorbed goes partly to increase internal energy and partly to do work. | (II) | Isochoric process |
| (C) | Heat is neither absorbed nor released by a system. | (III) | Isothermal process |
| (D) | No work is done on or by a gas. | (IV) | Isobaric process |
- (a) A-I, B-III, C-II, D-IV
- (b) A-I, B-IV, C-II, D-III
- (c) A-III, B-I, C-IV, D-II
- (d) A-III, B-IV, C-I, D-II

Put each statement into the first law, Q = Δ U + W, and see which term becomes zero.
- The tool. For any process, Q = Δ U + W. Each process in List II makes one quantity fixed or one term zero, and that is how you identify it.
Process What is fixed First law becomes Matches Isothermal (III) T, so PV = constant Δ U = 0, so Q = W (A): P ∝ 1/V Isobaric (IV) P Q = Δ U + W, both terms non-zero (B): heat goes partly to Δ U, partly to work Adiabatic (I) no heat exchange Q = 0, so Δ U = -W (C): no heat absorbed or released Isochoric (II) V W = 0, so Q = Δ U (D): no work done - Why B is isobaric. In an isothermal process all the heat becomes work, and in an isochoric process all of it becomes internal energy. Only at constant pressure does the heat split between both.
- So. The matching is A-III, B-IV, C-I, D-II, which is option (d).
The idea to keep. Isothermal means Δ U = 0. Adiabatic means Q = 0. Isochoric means W = 0. Isobaric is the one where heat feeds both Δ U and W.
