Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 4 steps
Noradrenaline is a nerve messenger, and too little of it is exactly what brings on depression.
- Statement I. Noradrenaline carries signals between nerve cells in the brain, so it is a neurotransmitter. Statement I is correct.
- Statement II. Noradrenaline helps regulate mood. When its level is low, signal-sending activity drops and the person can suffer from depression. So a low level is a cause of depression, and Statement II is incorrect.
- Link to drugs. This is why some antidepressants work. Iproniazid and phenelzine block the enzymes that break down noradrenaline, so its level stays up and mood improves.
- So. Statement I is correct and Statement II is incorrect, which is option (b).
The idea to keep. Low noradrenaline means depression, and antidepressants such as iproniazid and phenelzine work by stopping its breakdown. Remember the cause and the cure together.
