Narcotic means sleep-inducing, so a narcotic that relieves pain without sleep is a contradiction.
- What narcotic means. Narcotic analgesics relieve severe pain, and in medicinal doses they also produce sleep. That sleep-inducing action is what the word narcotic refers to.
- Statement I. Morphine is a narcotic analgesic, so the first part is right. But it relieves pain and produces sleep, so the claim of no sleep makes Statement I false. Pain relief without sleep describes non-narcotic analgesics like aspirin.
- Statement II. Morphine and its derivatives, such as codeine and heroin, are opiates. They come from the opium poppy, so Statement II is true.
- So. Statement I is false and Statement II is true, which is option (d).
The idea to keep. Narcotic analgesics like morphine relieve pain and cause sleep. Non-narcotic ones like aspirin relieve pain without sleep. Read every half of a statement, not just the label.
