Answer and solution
Answer (c) A and C
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 3 steps
An antagonist sits in the receptor's lock but does not turn the key, so the message never gets through.
- What receptors do. A receptor is a protein in the cell membrane. A chemical messenger binds to it on the outside, and the receptor passes the message into the cell. The messenger itself does not enter the cell.
- Two kinds of drug. An agonist binds to the receptor and mimics the natural messenger, switching the receptor on. An antagonist binds to the same site but does not switch it on, so it blocks the messenger and inhibits the natural communication.
Statement True for antagonists? Reason A. Bind to the receptor site Yes They occupy the site the messenger would use B. Transferred inside the cell No They act at the receptor on the cell surface C. Inhibit natural communication Yes Blocking the site stops the message D. Mimic the natural messenger No That describes agonists - So. Only A and C are true, which is option (c).
The idea to keep. Agonists and antagonists both bind to the receptor. Agonists mimic the messenger and switch the receptor on; antagonists block the site and switch the message off.
