- (c) Terfenadine

Answer and solution
Answer (a) Ranitidine
Solution
Chemistry ma’am · 2 steps
Ask what each drug blocks: ranitidine blocks the histamine receptor that makes the stomach release acid.
- Two histamine receptors. Histamine acts on H1 receptors to cause allergy symptoms. It acts on H2 receptors in the stomach wall to make it release HCl. A drug that blocks H2 receptors cuts acid at the source, so it acts as an antacid.
Drug What it does Class Ranitidine Blocks H2 receptors, so less acid is released Antacid Brompheniramine Blocks H1 receptors Antihistamine Terfenadine Blocks H1 receptors Antihistamine Meprobamate Calms anxiety and tension Mild tranquilliser - So. Only ranitidine (Zantac) controls stomach acidity, so the antacid is (a).
The idea to keep. Antihistamines and H2 blockers both stop histamine. Blocking H1 (brompheniramine, terfenadine) treats allergy. Blocking H2 (cimetidine, ranitidine) cuts stomach acid, so those are antacids.
